OpenCoffee Club LA Weekly

Open Coffee Club LogoSMNT have been hosting OpenCoffee Club meetings weekly since September 2014. After hosting 18 meetings we decided to make a short video so that others know what all these meetings are all about.

Open Coffee CupThe OpenCoffee Club is an open concept originated in London 8 years ago. The goal was to encourage entrepreneurs, developers and investors to organize real-world informal meetups to chat, network and grow. There are now over 100 around the world.

Santa Monica chapter meets every week, but rotates between Thursday and Saturday/Sunday.

Tech Cocktails in Santa Monica

Last Thursday, Sept 5, Cross Campus hosted Tech Cocktail Mixer & Startup Showcase.

12 Startups demoed in a casual expo style. They had 1 min each to present and the audience sent votes for the best ones via text.  It was a great format for networking and learning about what is new in the startup community.

We have hosted large events in Chicago, D.C., NY, San Francisco, Boston, Boulder, San Diego, Detroit, Boise, Austin, Barcelona and more.

8:10PM JobGenius – Love what you do

The mission of Job Genius is to help young people identify careers and jobs they will both enjoy and find meaningful. We aim to accomplish this goal by creating the world’s largest library of video informational interviews with professionals answering typical career questions and showing shots of them on the job. We will grow this library through user generated content. Any professional in the world can come to our site and upload an informational interview directly from their smart phone or tablet. In this way, young people will be able to learn about any job directly from the professionals doing it. Who are we? We are a ragtag group of college students from UCLA and OSU, doing our part to make the world a better and happier place. We will never charge students to access your informational interview.

8:20PM ViceJar – Changing the way you behave, changing the way you save

VICEJAR has taken the concept of a traditional curse jar and digitized it into an iOS application.  It has expanded this concept to include dynamic fitness tracking tools, GPS for running and cycling, a savings dashboard, a community section to share and collaborate, and a new concept for awards.  VICEJAR is an aspirational tool for those that want to better themselves.  It changes the way you save, it changes the way you behave.

LA Google i/o

The 6th Annual Google i/o conference was attended by 6,000 people and its keynote was watched on youtube by 1mln people!  40,000 people were watching  it at viewing parties, and one of them with 300+ people took place at Google I/O Extended at Google Los Angeles Venice office. The event was free of charge.

There were many interesting updates and new technology uncovered in music, video, eCommerce, etc.Google Venice event

Google + released 41 new features, and more importantly new user friendly design with related hashtags and more recommendation when you flip the card. Image analysis goes deeper and you can slide to other content.

Future of Maps
Create your own map with immersive imagery. All results are labeled on the map. Filter whats friends rated, their pics and descriptions, highlight all important places to me. Fly into a new restaurant with real 3D images inside. When you click on the street it will highlight and label all streets where to go to. Just Google demo responsiveclick, the map is the user interface. Also 3D view on the browser and pics from user uploaded photos. Integrated Google Earth and crowd sourcing.

Larry Page spoke at the end of the keynote. He said that the list of things to do is longer every day. There are many opportunities and we Google i/o LAare just scratching the surface of what is possible. Technology’s purpose is to free humans to do things we love (instead of farming and hunting in the past) and make us happiest at life. Tech is a tool. It is about problem solving and giving.
It was my first time at the Google Venice office, and it was impressive. There were people wearing Google glass. There were 3 tracks and more than 15 sessions to attend. Free food and drinks (including Kogi Korean food truck), raffles and gifts (Google T-shirt, $10 Google play card and Andru, all Android phones charger in the shape of Android), and great people to connect with!
