#100Startups

Networking at #100StartupsYesterday, Dec 5, we hosted our Holiday party/Reunion for all 100 startups that have presented at our events over last 20  months. We were lucky to have great sponsors Softlayer, WeezLabs, TechnicalConnections and Bloc who made sure we had plenty of Fresh Brothers pizza, beer and no cover fee! About 300 people gathered at Cross Campus last night 6-10PM. We had both old and new startups presenting.

Out of original 100 startups some wrote that they were not able to attend due to traveling, other commitments or simply because they are based out of state. Others came to the event but chose not to present. And there are of course those who are not pursuing what they worked on before.

SM Italian Pitch Fest #SMNT14

Italian Pitch FestFive Italian startups presented at Italian Pitch Fest organized by Bridges to Italy, Santa Monica New Tech and Cross Campus on Monday, Sept 9. Our amazing sponsors Insperity and Elance provided plenty of great wine and beer. Adam Chapnick, Co-Founder of Indiegogo, and Richard Koffler from Tech Coast Angels gave two short talks on how to fund ventures.

As Simona Asinovski from Cross Campus writes, Italian entrepreneurship has a certain flair to it:

“You can call it style, grace or sophistication. Bianca Dellepiane, President of Bridges to Italy, has her own theory. It’s the country, she says, that makes Italian entrepreneurs so different. “Most successful Italian products derive from a combination of heritage, technology, design and creativity”, says Bianca.Elance Sponsor SMNT14

In the last 10 years, the Italian entrepreneurial community has boomed – with new startups, angel groups, incubators and accelerators.

Yet once these startups attain a certain level of success, they grow past their Italian roots and seek attention in America. There’s more managerial, legal and financial new tech experts here in the States, which allows for greater expansion. Italy is also notorious for its preference for small businesses, so growing comMemberspanies seek the USA’s friendly attitude towards big businesses”.

More than 100 people came to meet Italian entrepreneurs. There were investors, local startup founders, consultants and just people interested in new technology. And it was interesting!  There were five presentations from education to medical devices and 3D virtual labs:

IMPARA: An automatic high performance AI-based engine for modeling and forecasting based on real world datasets coming from heterogeneous sources from which it learns and adjusts its behavior. Pulso Viral Live Update SMNT14

CHT: A single surgical instrument that, once inside the body, opens its arms, grasps the tissue on both sides allowing the doctor to move the instrument on the full area.

GoodsChange: Goodschange is the EBAY of the barter, it is a marketplace where companies publish offers of merchandise in excess getting credits. At the same time companies offer jobs that pay with the accumulated credits. Exchanges on Goodschange take place exclusively using Goodsy the official currency. The Goodsy accumulated by companies through the sales can be converted into real currency by paying an exchange commission.

Roobia3D: an innovative 3D Physics Virtual Lab which combines interactivity with the latest 3D video game-like computer graphics technologies to deliver an exciting and effective learning experience to students. Elance Mustaches SMNT14

Netminds: Targets the 370+ million cultural and archeological site visits per year with an app that makes the user be a part of history.

Santa Monica New Tech is famous for its feedback. Presenters received feedback in three ways: comments from the audience via Twitter live on PulsoViral board #SMNT14, formal feedback from Adam Chapnick (Indiegogo) and Richard Koffler (Tech Coast Angels) and more informal feedback in private conversations from all participants while sipping wine during after party.Bianca Bridges to Italy

But the best part of these events is networking.  Everyone had a name tag color-coded by role: technology, business or other. Business cards were swapped and email addresses saved in smart phones. Antonio Leone from Goodschange gave away add-on mustaches that were floating around the room! Hence, fun pictures later! And of course, well dressed Italians showed their style!

Bianca Dellepiane, President of Bridges to Italy, introduced startups to Silicon Beach, and Silicon Beach was happy to welcome Italian entrepreneurs.

Good luck in America and we will see you again soon!

Incubate, Accelerate and Pay It Forward for Business

Brian and Jason PIFYour Office Agent organized another cool Pay It Forward (PIF) for Business event at the Satellite and 3110 Lounge in Santa Monica on July 1.

PIF is about bringing the best companies in Santa Monica to give free advice and help grow small and medium sized businesses. It was the 4th PIF since Dec 2012, and it was Free of Charge. The focus has been from entrepreneurs to tech.

Every PIF has a giving wall, where people post their offerings to the community or just tell about their products and services. The Satellite provided an inspirational coworking facility and volunteers together with Your Office Agent team to keep it all simple.

The Giving Tree Wall

Format of the event

  • Firstly, people checked in in the back of 3110 main Street.  There were easy to follow directions.
  • After checking in, the first place to go was the 3rd Floor of Satellite to write gifts or offers on the giving wall. People also put their business cards into the envelopes under the other offers that they liked. The hosts at Satellite had lemonade for all to give.
  • After the giving wall participants proceeded to 31Ten Lounge downstairs to speak to the mentors and enjoy the giving environment.
  • From 8.30 to 9pm those who posted offers picked up their envelopes from the third floor and either went home or back to 31ten, where they continued with happy hour drinks and had three separate free beer promotions and played beer pong.

Mentor Prizes and assistance were valued at approximately $20,000 at the event.

There were about 20 companies giving prizJuly 1 PIF hivees and gifts at the tables. Big Prize – Stubbs Alderton & Markiles were giving away a free company formation to the company with the best story and business plan because they have a great PreAccelerator and want to help local startups.  The winner will be announced later in the week. Among dozens of give aways I liked:

1. The Santa Monica Chamber – free membership for one year

2. $5,000 from Media Leaders – media promotion services for your business

3. Insperity, an amazing publicly quoted HR firm, – a dinner for two in Chaya

July 1 PIF SMNT4. stevenkoistinen.com – video interviews

5. John Shiple – Freelance CTO – free advice and one free consultancy afterwards

6. Peak Hosting  – HR advice and a free ipad for the funniest company hosting disaster

7. Nina and her team at Your Office Agent have combined with Regus and Satellite – free month in Regus and Satellite to incubate the lucky start up

There were also offers from other companies: Asure Workspace Software, Swedish Chamber, Microsoft, and others, all there to give and connect.

Santa Monica New Tech also had a table and invited all attendees to our events. We had a display of technologies from 5  years, 3 years and 1 year ago. We told about volunteer oportunities in tech (ex. One Laptop per Child Update 2013). Our offer was one free ticket to our demo/feedback event on July 24 for those who stopped by our table at PIF4!

It was a vibrant networking environment. Thank you to all 450 people for paying it forward!

Concept Modeling at #SMNT11

Santa Monica New Tech#SMNT11 took place at CrossCampus on June 26. Santa Monica New Tech

Winston Perez gave a great presentation on Concept Modeling, the discipline he created. Read his articles: Superman http://bit.ly/19e5M4L and Godfather http://bit.ly/106Xwxn. After 5 new tech startups presented (Pollenate, Fatal Cut Entertainment, Bitium, AktiveBay, Rundavoo), Winston gave tips to all presenters on how to improve their concept models.

The best innovation of all times is not the bikini or beer and not even the underground sewage system or the bulb as was suggested … but wood bundles to make bonfire.

We videorecorded this event and will post it for all to view on SMNT Youtube channel when ready. Also, two more events are coming in July: AktiveBay
