Hack the Beach Event

Santa Monica Public LibraryThe City of Santa Monica, in partnership with the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, hosted a meetup at the Santa Monica Public Library for the 2015 National Day of Civic Hacking.

Our group was invited to this event to learn about open data, open source and civic tech in Santa Monica.

What:

Civic Hacking Santa MonicaHack the Beach is an effort by the City of Santa Monica to bring together civic-minded technologists interested in solving real-world challenges.

Our areas of focus are around open data, open source software, government transparency, and citizen engagement.

We welcome your bright ideas, your eye for creative and intuitive solutions, and your coding craftsmanship.

Why:

This is an unprecedented time for civic engagement. Governments are opening their data and internal Mayor of Santa Monicaprocesses, creating new avenues for collaborative problem solving.

From startups to well-established firms, Silicon Beach is booming. A rich talent pool coupled with a city government at the forefront of civic tech puts us in a unique position for innovative success.

The City of Santa Monica is proud to continue our tradition of partnership building. We invite you to join our civic tech community as we work together to make a positive impact on our city.

The event took place in Santa Monica Public Library on Saturday, June 6, 2015.

The Mayor of Santa Monica Kevin McKeown attended the event together with other government officials and community leaders.

SMNT at AppNation VI 2015

Drew Ianni, the Founder of  AppNation Conference, invited all members of Santa Monica NeThe Garagew Tech to AppNation VI in Las Vegas
January 5-6, 2015: www.appnationconference.com. It was perfect timing, as many members of our group were attending CES trade show one day later. And so we droAppNationve to Vegas to see what is new in apps and to meet app developers and publishers. And it was worth it! AppNation VI occupied  The Cosmopolitan. Rocket scientist from Facebook opened the conference on Monday. The panels, hackathon and mixers were full of passionate people. Great speakers from Spotify, Yo!, Airbnb, Pandora, Kabam, Electronic Arts, Coca cola, Nike, and many more. Delicious food and drinks were offered to VIP attendees.

The CosmopolitanThe party at the deluxe suite on the top floor with breathtaking views of Las Vegas was another hit! The Garage section with brand new app startups was the best part of the conference. The Garage was a showcase for app and mobile/emerging platform start-ups. Concept Modeling at #SMNT11

After 5 new tech startups presented (Pollenate, Fatal Cut Entertainment, Bitium, AktiveBay, Rundavoo), Winston gave tips to all presenters on how to improve their concept models.

The best innovation of all times is not the bikini or beer and not even the underground sewage system or the bulb as was suggested … but wood bundles to make bonfire.
